The story of the Holynski photography dynasty has been weaving family creativity together with the history of Slovenian photography for a century. An important part of this heritage, including the complete historical photography studio, is preserved today by the Slovenian Ethnographic Museum.
Karel Holynski – The Founder of the Family Photographic Legacy
It all began in the 1920s when my grandfather, Karel Holynski, started photographing promenaders along Ljubljana’s main strolls. From these encounters with the city and its people, our family photography story began to take shape.
His work was defined by ingenuity and a constant desire to push the boundaries of photography. In the 1930s, based on his own invention and patent, he built an automatic photo booth installed in the former Ideal cinema, known today as Komuna. In 1933, he received recognition at the First Exhibition of Portrait Photography in Ljubljana, and over the decades, he passed his expertise on to new generations of photographers.
His camera lens also captured the liberation of Ljubljana on May 9, 1945. Taken from various locations across the city, these photographs remain a valuable historic testimony to one of the most pivotal moments in the city’s history.
A Living Tradition
My own journey in photography began at the age of twelve. Ever since, I have been driven by a passion for the craft and a fascination with capturing light. In this way, our family tradition lives on without interruption — growing, evolving, and finding its modern expression.
Today, under the name The Foto Holynski, I combine generations of inherited expertise with my own experience and a contemporary visual aesthetic.
I shoot on location — at selected outdoor and commercial sites — as well as in a dedicated photography studio by prior appointment. The setting, lighting, and overall process are tailored specifically to each project, with a keen sensitivity to the person before the lens and the story we wish to tell.
With every new photograph, our family story continues.
